Brown was a lawyer by training.

During his twenties, Brown worked in the New York law offices of Alexander Hamilton. Brown passed the bar in 1802.

Brown held a seat on the Ohio Supreme Court before becoming governor.

As governor, Brown was a major advocate for the Ohio canals. 

When he took office, Ohio was suffering during a period of economic hardship. Brown played a major role in the state's general recovery.
