FAST FACTS:
Dunbar lived only thirty-three years, but he was a prolific writer. He produced dialect and standard English poetry, essays, short stories, and novels. Dunbar's second book, Majors and Minors, brought him international recognition.
His mother and father were both former slaves. His father, Joshua, served in the 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and the 5th Massachusetts Colored Calvary Regiment during the Civil War.
