FAST FACTS:

McKinley was a Civil War veteran. He signed up as private in the 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Battles in which he fought included Carnifax Ferry, Antietam, Opequan, Fisher's Hill, and Cedar Creek.

While a member of Congress in 1890, the McKinley Tariff Act was passed. McKinley was the first presidential candidate to campaign with a telephone.
