FAST FACTS:

Bartley was a farmer and merchant by trade.

Mordecai Bartley was the father of Thomas W. Bartley, Ohio's 17th governor. During the War of 1812, Bartley served as captain of a volunteer company and as a regimental adjutant under General William Harrison.

Bartley served in the Ohio General Assembly from 1816 to 1818.

Bartley served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1823 to 1831.

As governor, Bartley took a political stand against existing fugitive slave laws. He wanted to do away with social and legal restrictions placed on Ohio's free African American population.
